I don't know. I like military history, if that is interesting to you.
im down. not very knowledgeable on the subject but if you wanna talk about it im down
feel like telling me your favourite, or at least an interesting fact about military history?
Putin is a thief
how much i hate europeans
This feel when the snow speaks finnish
Ok then. Let me think of smth to talk about.
If I move to Siberia will I get a tiger?
i have no strong opinions on this matter though i imagine if i lived in russia i might. i do sympathize with you not liking your government though, i am not a big fan of justin trudeau, but i imagine the scale of my dislike is nowhere near the scale of the hatred for putin. i have never heard anyone say "putin is OK"; people either seem to love him or hate him. much like the opinion of donald trump, in this regard. i wish you and your country the best of luck
sorry i dont have a lot to say about this
sure lets talk about that, why do you hate europeans? i hate french people but that's mostly due to quebec and nothing to do with france
yeah man youve piqued my interest, looking forward to reading whatever it is you have to say
You will get anthrax
But will I get a tiger though?
like as a pet?
no, most of them are died
soemon play wit me ples
I sure wish I wasnt a kissless virgin
I guess I could start with the basics, and briefly talk about one of my favorite subjects, tanks. And the history of the first tank more specifically.
Maybe you are already aware of the fact that tanks were first used during WWI on the western front. And maybe you've also heard that they were built to attack across the western front, through what is called the no-man's-land. But what about the very first tank that saw service? How did they come up with it, and what was it like?
Germany, France and the UK were, in the middle of the first world war, thinking of ways to break the stalemate of the western front, where machineguns, artillery and barbed wire made cavalry charges of old all but useless at breaking through the enemy lines and making a push. The germans tried to find a way around this problem by creating what they called "sturmtruppen" (literally assault troops), specialized soldiers chosen among the bravest, equipped with loads of grenades and pistols, whose mission was to sneakily invade the enemy trench and disrupt the enemy, throwing 'nades around the place and stealing as much enemy equipment as possible. This was only moderately effective, as this was obvisously extremely dangerous, and sturmtruppen usually had high casualties.
But the british and the french thought of making the tank, which at first was called a "landship": as the name suggests, the goal was to make the equivalent of a warship on land, with big guns and bulletproof armor, that could cross the no-man's-land. Before the war, almost every nation had armoured cars, but these were no good in cross-terrain, so they had to come up with something else.
Thankfully, a few years prior, caterpillar tracks became a thing in the US, primarily with a tracked tractor, called the Baby Holt. The brits saw the potential in this machine, and hastily put together a prototype. They simply took one of those tractors, and strapped some armor plates on top, to see if this could work.
part 2 coming
play what
the feeling of loneliness is a terrible one, i agree, but not much ever came from wishing, my ozzy friend
also kissing and sex and shit are nothing heartfulfilling like you would expect. i was always under the impression id get mad butterflies or feel completely different after a kiss or anything further. it doesnt work that way, at least not for me.
when i had a girlfriend, i almost felt like whenever we kissed or made out, it was because we HAD to or that's what was expected; implied/imposed on the relationship. it's nice to be intimate, sure, but it really just seems like something you have to do and not much more than that. perhaps i didnt love her enough and that's why, but i digress
They dubbed this new machine Little Willie, in honor of one of its creators. But they quickly realized that the small size of the thing would not do, as it could hardly cross trenches. So instead, they decided to make a new chassis of their own, reusing the Holt design, but lenghtening it significantly. They also made this rhombus shape to make it easier to go over obstacles.
Tracks were a game-changer compared to wheels: not only could they allow the tank to cross difficult terrain, but they could also crush barbed wire, making a way for infantry following it.
The brits barely tested this new version, as they were in a hurry to deploy it on the field. This is what would become the Mark I.
(This is a Mark V btw, Mark I photos are hard to come by)
what do you think
Being the first of its kind, it was a machine with a lot of unique quirks. First of all, the engine was placed in the middle of the tank, not separated from the crew. This meant that the heat produced by the engine running at full speed to move the thing would bleed into the compartment, along with fumes and exhaust gas, making the air almost unbreathable. Crewmembers had to work in shifts of just a few hours to make this more manageable. And speaking of crewmembers, there's a lot of people inside a tank like this : the actual number may vary, but it was usually around 8 men being crammed inside one of these. And it was not a very pleasant ride either : since the tank hd no suspension whatsoever, every bump could be felt, and the men inside had to wear padded helmet to prevent injuries.
But the british were indeed the first to deploy a tank. In total, only a handful of Mark I tanks were built : after field testing, designers realized many of the flaws of the machine, including long guns that could easily get stuck, a very weak engine that broke down frequently, and a frontally mounted fuel tank that made the tank very dangerous indeed. So this version was eventually replaced by the Mark II, then III, up to V, which became, with the Mark IV the most produced british tank of WWI.
There's a lot more I could say about this, but this is about it for now. I don't want to bore you too much. Tell me if you found this interesting and you wish to know more.
Do you think Canada has a future, or it destined to be shit as the ever prevailing US billionaires fuck us raw?
nah ur doomed to chink in the west faggots from within
Here's an FT-17 that saw use in Afghanistan by the Taliban.
It was recovered (as shown in pic) and is being sent to a museum (although I don't remember which one).
Thanks for the clarification Moshe. I'll start planning my moving to.. Oh I don't know, Texas or Utah?
>that could cross the no-man's-land
is that where the expression comes from? that's really cool, id never have known or even thought about it until you brought it up
>i dont want to bore you too much
your posts are actually some of the most interesting things ive ever read. really good posts user, i can definitely see why this interests you. i guess i never really thought about it too much - i always just though "oh yeah tank, yeah those exist and are hella powerful", and never gave it too much thought. would never have guessed the difficulty crossing trenches or shitty terrain. id love to hear more if you feel like talking still
woops got forced anonymous on all boards and didnt actually open your picture. sorry men
you got good taste though, tf2 is great
hard to say. for this point, i am happy about justin trudeau being almost a polar opposite to trump, if only because the vocal minority likes trudeau more for his progressiveness than trump for... well everything. i believe canada will remain their own identity, but we will not prosper as much as the other developed countries. there is actually a very large market and interest in native (canadian) products and such, and there are people who refuse to buy things solely due to american tides. i don't think we will ever be as rich as the US or other first world countries, but i don't think we will go down the shitter. thats my worthless two cents, but if you have anything else to add id like to hear that too. what do you think about your own question?
Neat, and a berliet turret at that. It looks in very good condition for a piece of scrap this old.
>tf2 is great
I'm glad you find it interesting.
The expression of No Man's Land came before the tanks themselves, and simply referred to the fact that it was very hard and dangerous to cross this part of the front, hence no one really tried.
And yes, crossing difficult terrain is the main reason why tanks became a thing during WWI. Though it changed later on, as speed became more important. I guess I can make another post or two, I really don't mind.
backpacking on this, i feel like canada is much more into nuclear power than the US, which personally is of interest to me - i have a degree in chemistry and a masters in nuclear physics. radiation safety officers get paid a SHIT load here in canada for a job that is so mudane and so easy but legally required for any institution that handles any sort of radioactive material. i work in a hospital and literally get paid to tell people their equipment for, well usually cancer, is functioning properly. i didnt go to med school and i am not qualified to read the xrays or scans, only to tell you that your machines to runs the scans and shit are functioning and that nobody will die because of a machine malfunction. it is the easiest and most mundane job ever but it pays retardedly well because the discipline is so niche. im not sure id be able to find something like this in the US.
fun fact: your smoke detector most likely contains radioactive material, which is how it detects smoke in the first place!
nigga i bought TF2 when it was $20 and loved it, still play it. bought overwatch also when it was released in the beta, but the more i played overwatch, the more i wished i was playing TF2. what class do you main?
heavy duh
i am genuinely interested in reading this and i am sure there are people lurking this thread but not posting that would also like to read about it. definitely continue if you want! you have an audience for sure. i can spout some bullshit about radioactive materials and nuclear physics in return if you'd like
fucking based i mained medic when i played religiously
my favourite combination
though once i got the medieval medic set i was hooked; it's just way too much fun to play. snipe healing your teammates is so satisfying, especially when they win a fight because of you. im aware its not that good but it's just so much fun.
what are your thoughts on the heavy weapons? which is the best? which is the most fun to use?
Yeah, if I'm remembering the news story on it correctly the operators bailed out the moment they heard that aircraft had arrived, luckily the pilots didn't bomb it. I like to think that the pilots did a pass just to see if they could save it. Military members love old gear like that.
>inb4 meta tomi banana + fos
i use either minigun or tomi combined with sandvich + FoS, and for medieval mode.... you know beef + kgb
sometimes i brass shit for keks, and sometimes beef + HP
If we could kick those Greenpeace cocksuckers out, Canada would have far more reactors in place making electricity where hydroelectric wasn't an option.
They killed the plant idea up in northern Alberta by Grimshaw, that was going to power both Ft. McMurray and Grand Prairie (both major oil & gas industry hubs that could have used the clean electricity to great emissions reducing affect).
It's just like the protests against the new super size pipelines. One of them, compared to train or ship emissions, is equivalent to removing tens of millions of automobiles equivalent emissions over its lifespan.
But nope, they keep blocking clean ideas because they're “dirty” in the public eye thus it makes them plentiful donation money.
the uncertainty of the future
Since I talked about british tanks, I think it's only fair to talk about french tanks too, as they turned out to be extremely important and influencial overall.
France had the idea of making tanks at around the same time as the UK, as the two countries were already sharing a lot of information. Immediatly, the french government tasked a few companies to create tanks of their own. They asked big companies specialized in warship and locomotives production to come up with something quickly. They went the same way as the UK, using the american tractor as a base. But instead of making a whole new track system for their tanks, they simply copied it and built a big metal box surrounding the whole thing, fit a gun and a couple of machineguns inside and called it a day. This tank was the Schneider CA1. Being very small and quickly put together, it was not really great: like british tanks, it was very slow, broke down all the time, and fighting inside one of it wwas an absolute nightmare. But this was a first step that proved the concept. 100 of these were ordered by the french government. In the meantime, a competing company to Schneider called FAMH was working on a competing project. This one too used the american tractor, but tried to lenghthen the tracks just a bit so they could make the tank longer. They wanted to fit a fully fledged artillery piece inside of it too, in order to outgun Schneider's design. But this turned out to be more of a mistake than anything: requiring lots of space, installing this gun inside the tank meant there was a huge overhang at the front and the back. In turn, this overhang meant it was terrible on uneven ground, and could easily get stuck. Nevertheless, they proposed this tank, and with the support of a french general that was in support of the project, it was accepted too under the name «Saint-Chamond», the name of the city where FAMH was located. Another 100 of these were ordered.
(pic related is a CA1)
lots of people dont like nuclear power so much, which is sad, but the high level waste is just terrible. water, all its types, is pretty damn good at absorbing and not releasing ionizing radiation, but the public backlash and ignorance is apparently just too much.
the argument against nuclear power is seemingly always chernobyl and fukushima, and to a lesser extent chalk river. chernobyl was pretty bad but that was due to negligence. fukushima was really just a combination of everything that could go wrong did, in the most unlikely of circumstances. they built the built with security measures in case of floods/tsunamis and in case of earthquakes, but not both at the same time. rather unfortunate. i totally get im biased on the nuclear power aspect because its my discipline, but i cant help but think the majority of people who dont know much about it legitimately just dont know, not that i blame them.
i actually had the pleasure of going to check out some fukushima fish farms, would you guys like to see?
In the meantime, a french general by the name of Jean Baptiste Estienne had another idea for tanks. Instead of making these large and heavy tanks like the british, he had the is idea of a «mosquito tank» (char moustique), a small-sized, cheeap and lightweight vehicle that could be used in overwhelming numbers. These small machines could be used in charges of hundreds of tanks at once. But the rest of the military was not keen on his idea, and so he decided to take another approach, by contacting the car manufacturer renault directly, and task him with creating a prototype he could then show to the military. Renault agreed, and in early 1917 it was accepted in service as the Renault FT.
Unlike previous tanks, this one had a lot of very interesting and innovative solutions: it was the first tank to be built with a rotating turret, where the main gun was placed. Unlike british tanks, which had multiple guns, and more crewmembers to man them, the FT only required two people to operate: one driver, and one tank commander which also used the gun. This meant, in turn, that the tank could be made smaller and lighter. Where british designs sat at around 30 tons, the FT only weighed 7, making it cheaper and easier to transport. It's no surprise, knowing this, that the FT was by far the most heavily produced tank of WWI, with around 6000 vehicles being manufactured before the armistice.
The tank also had a huge impact worldwide: after WWI, most countries noticed the FT, and sought to buy it. Thankfully for them, France had thousands of tanks sitting around, and sold them to whoever wanted one. From the US to Poland, to Italy and many more, the FT became the basis of tank design for a good decade after that. It is often considered the first «modern» tank.
Also, I didn't see a part of your post.
I'm ok if you talk about nuclear power and such. I studied physics for quite some time, and I still find this subject to be very interesting.
it's actually outlandish to me right now that they didn't consider the condition of the soldiers over the functionality of the tank. i mean it totally makes sense at the time, but at the current year/day I feel like that would NEVER fly. i guess nations really just seemed to want to get the upper no matter the consequences. i wonder now when the tank was first like... introduced, how people trained to operate it? that must have been such a ridiculous concept at the time? but holy shit what a breakthrough in military technology. i can definitely see why military history interests you - youve caught my interest too with these posts. lots of things i would never have thought about or even considered until now. thank you for sharing this
oh dont worry you talk about military history in a way i could never talk about anything, it's fascinating
First of all OP, having a girlfriend, is like having a daughter you FUCK. You call her baby, & you take her out to dinner, so you CAN FUCK. So when she's off on business trips, it's like, GOD DAMN. WISH I HAD MORE DAUGHTERS.
I MEAN AM I RIGHT?
oh dont worry i dont have a girlfriend anymore and im certain you arent being genuine, but the intimacy and companionship was nice
it's nice to have a pretty and down to earth girl to talk about and do normal things with
im learning lately though they seem to be far and few between, unfortunately
Hey-o!
But I digress. Why, what are you looking for in others, & do you want a girlfriend? Of sorts?
to be self aware for a moment, i tend to push people away or not give it too much of a thought because i am afraid of getting heartbroken again. total bitch move, i know, but i'm working on it. its also pretty terrible to invest in someone and let your guard down, only for them to not reciprocate, so i am pretty sure i almost like, do that for them? so i dont have to be crushed later, it just never happens from the start.
im aware this is not healthy nor good, i am working on it. but i am pretty emotionally fragile, as much of a bitch as that makes me sound like, so im pretty selective in the people i let into my life. im pretty scared that if i give a girl a chance she wont feel the same way and ill be back to square one and ill subconsciously tell myself "see you shouldnt do that again", which is exactly why i should do that again. i dont think much good ever comes from wishing, and you learn a lot from stepping out of your comfort zone and failure in general - it's just a matter of getting over that fear of failure or rejection. working on it. joined an orchestra actually to try and connect a bit more.
seems weirdly comforting to talk about "out loud". thanks user
how are you doing?
damn i did not realize how much i needed to type that out for me to realize it. sorry to vent on a thread thats supposed to be about you guys, but i want to thank you for the question/inquiry, so thank you!
It's true that today's tank offer a level of comfort people back then could only dream of. A lot of factors could explain this, but I think it's mostly because of the hurried nature of tank production at the time, and the overall lack of concern for soldiers back then.
As for training: you'd be surprised how easy it is to drive a tank, as it operates pretty much like a car with a manual transmission. The only noticeable difference is that on most tanks of the time, steering was done not using a steering wheel but two levers: pulling on a lever would slow down one track, and make the tank turn in that direction.
During WWII, crewmembers received very little training before entering combat: training was pretty much limited to driving up to the frontline, and learning by practice. But later on, armies developed specialized tank units. It was not rare to see obsolete vehicles being converted into training tanks like pic related, a german Panzer I without it's turret.
And what is interesting is that tanks are not really that huge of a breakthrough, but rather a continuation of what already existed before. For a very long time, standard infantry was not really the focus of armies. The cavalry was the real game changer, as it could easily sweep through enemy lines, and deal lots of damage very quickly. This is why cavalry was such an elite and respected corps, and why most nations today still keep cavalry units for the prestige of it. But cavalry itself became obsolete during WWI. So, to oversimplify a lot, you could say that tanks are kind of the continuation of cavalry.
If you wish to learn more abut this sort of things, I suggest you check out
tanks-encyclopedia.com
their content is, from what I've seen, mostly accurate. It may be a little technical at first, but nothing too complicated.
>During WWII, crewmembers received very little training before entering combat
Meant WWI, sorry.
I can feel the sleepiness making its way in
damn, i gotta say i was a bit hopeful for more documentation and history on this
i screen capped and saved your posts on this btw, thanks for sharing this i really enjoyed this, and im certain im not the only one
I'm doing spectacularly. Without saying too much, the next time I post on this board [since realistically, I haven't been here in 7 months or so] I'll have a different flag. All thanks to my girl. I just think it's hilarious to , without context, to break a silence, announce that "I like fUCKING."
Which explains my initial joke. I don't get the punchline either.
I'm glad you're feeling better user. I am very well in my life so anything you're attempting to do for me almost went over my head, as had I not found an urge to return to this thread [I usually don't] you're engaging with an honest to god Jow Forums shitpost LeGeNd going on 13.5 years now.
>13.5 years
damn youre more ancient than me, ive been here since 2006. glad to hear all is well, makes a fellow oldfag feel hopeful. good for you man, guess we arent all robots afterall
>all robots afterall
WTF!!!
Don't worry, I'm not in a hurry either. If you wish to learn more, there's plethora of books and videos online. Another interesting source is this youtube channel.
youtube.com
What's so interesting about it is that it has lots of videos about the subject, with videos even showing the inside of multiple tanks of different eras and nations. It really helps to get an idea of what being inside one of these things is like.
I'm also very happy to be able to talk about it. Jow Forums folks are more interested in guns and gear, and /his/ is...well, it's /his/, let's just say. A couple of years ago, I used to chat about this on Jow Forums with people, but it was a long time since I last had the opportunity to
Would people still consider me anti-semitic if I don't hate all jews but just one specific one?
nah
Or maybe was it a year ago? Being on and off Jow Forums makes everything so confusing
All hail the Kiwi God
You're a big guy.
for you
thanks user, always appreciate people's thoughts on the matter. although I still think I'll feel at least slightly more accomplished once I lose my v's, despite everyone saying that it doesnt really do anything like that.
I second this guy's opinion: sex and relationships are not the game-changer you would expect from reading what people say about it. Aside from the short period of time when your brain is jacked up on dopamine, it feels about the same. If a void in your life doesn't come from loneliness itself, it won't change anything. And being in a relationship is not the only cure to loneliness either.
Some people just care way too much about this, and make it a big deal when it really is not.
shameless
