Hey so uhmm I felt like talking about history stuff a little more, so...here it is.
Lately I've been to a trip in Sweden. Just plain old vacations. And I heard of this tank museum they have, called Arsenalen. Being a huge fan of this stuff, I decided to check it out, and it led me to make further research on the subject of swedish tanks. And it was like I hit a gold mine on this one.
Because, you see, when you hear the name «Sweden», you probably don't think about big frickin tanks. But, surprisingly (or rather, unsurprisingly), they had quite a bunch of military technology to their name, and in fact, still do today. So I made a deep dive into the history of swedish tanks, and here's what I found so far. There's obviously a lot to talk about, and I could probably write down a whole article for each tank, but let's try to summarize this.
Like many nations after WWI, Sweden sought to get this new tank technology, as they saw that it was quite effective, and would soon become a big thing, they thought. One common practice at the time was to buy foreign tanks, study them, and then make vehicles of your own, more or less based on what you acquired in the first place. And, at the time, the big two sellers were the UK and France, being the two countries to have pioneered tanks during WWI.
But what about Germany? Surely, they had the means to make tanks too, right? They did during WWI, but nowhere near as many as the brits and frenchies. The reason why is simple: fuel shortage. Whatever little amount of petrol Germany could get its hands on at the time would be used by the navy first, and so there was nothing left to fuel lots of tanks. So they simply built a handful of tanks of their own, the A7V. But this big metal box was not the only project they had.
Another project was the Leichter Kampfwagen (lighter fighting vehicle), often shortened to LK.
Pic related, LK II
But the armistice happened, and the Treaty of Versailles changed the whole thing. Among the sanctions put on Germany by the treaty, one was restrictions on the types of armements they could have: new technology at the time, like planes and tanks, were strictly forbidden. So all their LK were simply sitting around doing nothing.
Sweden wasn't all that interested by the french and british offers, and caught wind of Germany's tanks. Technically, Germany was not allowed to sell them to anyone, as they were kind of stuck in legal limbo, but they managed to ship them out to Sweden, disguised as tractors. So, in 1921, Sweden got its hands on their first tank, which entered service under the name Stridvagn (often abreviated to Strv) fm/21. For a good while, this was the only tank Sweden had, and they eventually replaced the failing engines, bringing them up to the fm/28 standard.
(the fm/21 they have at said museum. I have more detailed pictures that I took myself on my main PC, but can't access it right now).
how to build the perfect escapist fantasy
The 2nd tank Sweden got was a french vehicle this time. At around 1928, they were looking for a tank to replace their aging fm/21s: these things were used to the bone by training exercises, and were not really up to the standard of the era with their slow speed and lack of a main gun.
France, at the time, offered to export a new vehicle, the Renault NC. This tank was basically an old FT from WWI, but with a couple of modifications, including a better suspension and a lengthened hull capable of taking a more powerful engine. The goal was to make the FT, but faster.
Other countries, Japan most notably, bought a few, and so did Sweden. They bought one for testing in 1928. The results were quite horrible: not only was this thing vastly outdated by then, but it was also plagued with mechanical issues of all sorts, making the test an absolute nightmare. Seeing this, the swedish governement simply gave up on the NC. They placed a lot of hopes on this tank however, as they really wanted to get a new vehicle quickly. But this failure meant that they would have to find another solution. After much deliberation, they decided to make a vehicle of their own, using the experience they acquired from the NC and LK II.
Sadly it looks this is it for tonight. I'll keep going tomorrow if people are interested and the thread is still up.
