Actually, they should have focused on the south. After destroying the Kiev pocket, the Germans should have captured Crimea and Rostov, straitened their lines, and prepared for winter. This would have put them in a much stronger position to seize the desperately needed oil for the next summer.

Well they did capture Crimea and Rostov, and did focus on the Caucasus after that, to disastrous consequences. Capture Stalingrad and Baku at the same time? I'm no military strategist, but that doesn't sound like a good idea, coupled with the fact German generals stated supply was to stretched to take Stalingrad that year.

Seizing Moscow would've done nothing but embolden and enrage the remainder of the Russian population. The Caucus oil fields though, those would've made a tremendous impact and kept things going another long and bloody two years.

Has everyone that talks about capturing the oilfields in Caucasia forgotten about the oilfields in Siberia? Namely the ones near Surgut and Khanty-Mansiysk.

The only way the Gerrmans could have won on the Eastern Front is if Hitler died in a plane crash shortly after Operation Barbarossa. But jokes aside, even German generals at the time and afterwards say concentration should have been on Moscow, and consolidation of forces in the South for Case Blue to attack one of two targets: Stalingrad and Baku.

concentration on moscow would have done nothing. stalin was an absolute nut so its extremely doubtful that he would have given up if moscow was taken.

Hitler should have learned his lesson on how 2-front wars end considering he fought in one.

Your dad is unironically correct, Stalin was just as stubborn as Hitler and like him refused to evacuate his capitol. Barbarossa was actually a smashing success in most sectors and it was specifically the drive on Moscow (Fall Taifun/Plan Typhoon) that stalled. Also, the USSR at this point had just gone undergone massive purges in all political and military sectors and packed with recently-minted Stalin loyalists. No Stalin means these people are suddenly under the gone from former anti-Stalinists and the Wehrmacht at the same time. There's a sgnificant possibility that the whole rotten structure does indeed come down with one swift kick if that swift kick eliminates Stalin as a factor.

My "How to win the war for the Reich" plan:

1st of all, focus Kriegsmarine resources into U-boats and Panzerschiff, forget vanity projects like the Bismark and Tirpitz. Use PzrSf in numbers to tie up RN heavy surface combatants and the U-boats to strangle the UK.

2nd, let Mussolinni fend for himself in Greece and the Balkans unless the British actually land a substantial body of troops, it will delay Barbarossa by vital weeks and push Taifun into October rather than August.

3rd, MAKE SURE von Bock has what he needs to ensure a breakthrough at the Moscow Suburbs. Barbarossa is workable, but in the end it succeeds or fails with Fall Taifun.

5th, the MKb. 41, and especially the new 8mm kurzpatrone, is brilliant, stamped-steel aesthetics be damned. Replace ALL submachine guns and rifles with it IMMEDIATELY, except for one or two men in a squad armed with scoped Kar98s as precision weapons. Keep 8x57mmIS around ONLY for the MG42 and the precision rifles.
