The fucking onions in here, anyways as an oldfag; I can attest that body hair really went out of style in the late 90s. I believe this was due to two major events: the rise of teen girl spending & the advent of digital media. Twinks used to and still shave to show off their bodies, these twinks would get jobs in the (((fashion industry))) modeling clothes. Most models in the in bananna rep, old navy, sears, media; smoking hot guys who were twinks. Not so oddly the most sought after brands by middle class whites specificly girls back then was acrombie and fitch and Hilfiger. AF & hilgiger used to drown their sales media and stores with twinks, I mean almost every guy on their model teams had a wide, deep chest and a six pack. You can't show those of without shaving and the other problem is back then digital cameras and compression could not deal with the fine line contrast of bodyhair. The solution was to just remove body hair and add any later with photoshop or corel. It really had an effect on teens back then, they would shave their hair just to look like what the girl wanted.
