PhDs are gonna be smarter than most people you’ll see on the street. But they tend to be extremely specialized intelligences which is not as useful in investing or business where you need broad knowledge or intelligence as well.

Personally, I don’t like PhDs just because most I’ve seen are very dependent on their PhD for a sense of authority and accomplishment. In reality it just tends to be a poor financial decision unless you really have a desire to do research for a living. I’m hoping I can get my girlfriend to not end up in academic hell, she’s still undergrad and already has a plan for at least one Doctorate. No reason other than that “she’s smart enough to get one”. Which she definitely is! I’d wager, so am I! So are many people! But that’s not a good reason to get one.
