That's not how it works user. They realized gains from selling Coin A and buying Coin B. Instead of setting aside money for taxes, they decided to reinvent/gamble it all on coin B. When coin B depreciated greatly, they couldn't afford the tax burden.
They had the profit, they just chose not to set it aside.
