Cheaper to a degree that doesn't justify a further centralization of power. European members just have to coordinate in order for each government to slightly focus their military spending on the branches their geographic locations require, in our case for example it would be navy and to a degree air force.
In fact, the Union is nothing but an overly-expensive and undemocratic tool to achieve shit that a simple cooperation between nations could achieve, in fact it's so inconvenient one can't help but wonder what's actually behind it.
