The strange thing is, that the Portuguese language was never affected by the conquest in the same way Spanish was. Portuguese has barely any Arabic vocabulary (8% of Spanish is Arabic) and it has no Arabic sounds (unlike Castilian which pronounces s as th and j as h). So without the conquest, the entire peninsula would basically be speaking modern Portuguese.

But Basque lacks any of Spanish's unique sounds, it can't account for the sounds Spanish has in common with Arabic. For some reason, Portuguese just wasn't affected. My theory is that because the area of the precursor of Portuguese (Old Galician) was never conquered by the Arabs. Whereas the modern day Spanish language derives from Madrid, which was actually built by the Muslims in the 9th century.
