South Koreans are about to get absolutely raped, socially, economically and pretty much every other way.

They live in their own delusional world in which they are masters of a powerful, independent, democratic nation frustrated by the United States, Japan, and a class of exploitative elites who have held them back.

In reality, they are something like a peninsular American version of Portuguese Macao. Sure, they are right to question South Korean history and South Korea since 1948 has fallen short of democratic norms, but its institutions including the hated Korean National Intelligence Service and from without the United States Forces, Korea have long protected their ordinary freedoms: the freedom of movement. The freedom to work any job subject to meeting the requirements in a free market. Relative freedom of speech limited by the necessity of preventing the state being overthrown by its relentless enemies.

The South Korean establishment and the United States were unable to prevent leftists from taking over at this point ALL South Korean institutions including now virtually all of the media (with the exceptions of Donga Ilbo and Chosun Ilbo), the NIS, the government, all of the unions, and the military.

Some blame leftist agitators, North Korea, Jeolla people and so on for what is happening, leaving the mass of the Korean population blameless. This is naive: they have been indoctrinated, but the truth is that they wanted to be. They want to see themselves as a powerful, righteous group of warriors, the triumphant vanguard of a tribe and social class taking what was always rightfully theirs, sweeping away a hated foreign occupier and a traitorous clique of villains.

They are about to discover how stupid and arrogant they are. When they have "won," they will find themselves hated, despised, and a pathetic underclass in their own country, destroyed ultimately by their own jealousy, resentment, and racial hatred.

A good preview for what relations between North Koreans and South Koreans will be like can be seen in Hong Kong today.

South Koreans will cling to their wealth and more "developed" material culture as a means of claiming social superiority over Northerners, Northerners on the other hand will use their superior "patriotic" bone fides to claim a higher position on the social totem pole (which will be hard for South Koreans to get back against, since South Koreans themselves are busy tearing down the legitimacy of their own state as psuedo-colonial and morally inferior). They will also likely use the Japanese collaborator meme as an excuse to dispossess the wealthiest South Koreans. Many South Koreans will join in themselves out of their own class resentments, but North Koreans and their political allies in the South will make sure that North Koreans get the biggest share of the spoils.

The South Korean dialect and English will fatally decline in status, and the speaking of either in public will attract scorn and mockery, in an ironic reversal of the previous situation. South Koreans will feel forced to try to purge all English loanwords from their speech. Ice-cream will be 얼음보숭이. 폰 will be 휴대전화 once again.

The will simply isn't there. The best South Koreans can achieve is a union between equals which amounts to a compromise between the two systems. But even that's probably too optimistic.

Also total population counts are only so important. In terms of exerting their will and dominating the other society, I don't see any particular reason for South Koreans to have the upper hand. Right now, the few North Koreans that arrive in South Korea are essentially supplicants. They have and feel the obligation to fit in with South Koreans even if they don't like it (even so they complain a lot at how South Koreans use petty shit like lookism and accent snobbery to make them social inferiors).

In a unification situation or anything like it it would be very different. North Koreans are not collectively going to accept being the cleaners, waitresses and taxi drivers at the periphery of society. Why should they, if they don't have to? If there is something both ordinary North Koreans and the North Korean regime both agree on, it's likely this.

That's what North Korea's nuclear weapons are for, to make some kind of reunification at least seem like a less bad option than a US-North Korean war that would total the whole peninsula.

In reality though it's a do you want it in the belly or the head dilemma, whatever happens now South Koreans are going to get it hard. And while ordinary North Koreans hate the regime, one thing both North Koreans and the regime agree on is that they want a lot of South Korean gibs, and South Korean liberals are happy to put their "own" people (in reality, they see themselves as pursuing the interests of the whole Korean people though, not just the South) into a position where they're forced to give them. It fits in with their worldview of "the rich should give to the poor" in any case.
