There were things I disliked (the density, the crowds during cherry blossom season, the needless chaos on sidewalks because of a lack of a consistent rule on what side to walk on, the sexual depravity at times), but I had a good time. I hope you visited Kyoto because its the best part of the country. You should have done your research to know that Japanese castles and shrines are rarely interesting on the inside unlike the christian/european tradition.

And yes, most temples and shrines were rebuilt very recently, and in some places they were building new shrines from scratch, having nothing more than records and rubble of them. But everywhere does that - the colisseum has been largely rebuilt, much of france was affected by the wars, etc...
