My city still has a lot of Spanish colony architecture and I see them everywhere.
El problema es que el centro no cambió mucho su arquitectura, y las calles siguen siendo diminutas. Por eso se hace tanto trafico ahi.
I mean. It was originally the wealthy part of the city. It used to be a walled city with the rich living in the Intra-muro (inside) and the poor in the Arrabal (outside). During the XX century, the elite started migrating to newer parts of the city like Bellavista and San Francisco and San Felipe (Casco Antiguo) stated to be populated by people of lower income. Sadly, this meant that the area started decaying considerably. Lack of maintenance on the part of their inhabitants meant the loss of several architectonical heritages. It wasn't until very recently( a few decades) that the State saw it's potential and start several restoration programs. There are some accusations of gentrification and that is always kind of sad, but living in a historical heritage is always expensive. There are lots of multimillionaire investment on this part as it gains more and more importance as a touristic spot.

Having said this. There is a lot of successful examples of social housing in Casco Viejo.

I see. I think gentrification of historical areas is a positive thing mainly because they take better care of it then the poor.
