Saint-Louis church in Algeria

The history of this church is particularly interesting and testifies to the different invasions Algeria has suffered during the course of history.

The church was originally a mosque, Djamal Ibn El Beitar, built in 1347. After the invasion of Oran by the Spaniards in 1509, it was totally destroyed, and in place the church Notre Lady of Victory was built.

In 1708, after the victory over the Spaniards by the Turkish Bey Mustapha Ben Youssef, Muslims ransacked the church and the place was offered to the Jews to establish their synagogue. The Spaniards invaded Oran again in 1732 and the place once again became a church.

During the earthquake of 1790 it was largely destroyed and finally abandoned by the Spaniards in 1792.

The church was finally rebuilt by the French in 1838

The Spanish Gate is a monumental arched gateway located in the Sidi El Houari neighborhood and is currently one of the most important remains of Spanish architecture in Oran.

After the invasion of Oran by Spain in 1509, the Spaniards knowing that the city was coveted, decided the construction of walls surrounding the city and interspersed with doors. This is how the Spanish gate will be built in 1589 by order of Captain Don Pedro de Padilla.
