They didn't. Well they gave the order but Stalin (who was a Tsarist okhranka agent embedded into the Bolshevik party) stopped it and hid them away. They eventually went on to live as normal citizens of the USSR and their descendants are still alive in Russia.
Did he say Stalin or the Bolsheviks? But I agree that maybe the numbers are a bit off.
AFAIK Stalin wasn't personally involved in the murder of the Romanov family, including their daughters, it was ordered by Lenin according to Trotsky diaries, and exectued by a battalion lead by Yakov Yurovsky.
