I went this year for 10 days without the confidence to say anything beyond "ありがとうございます!!" and now I'm doing the same thing. I'm going to learn as much Japanese as possible before next year, and I'm going back. At one of the bars I stopped in while I was in Tokyo I was talking to the bartender for an hour or so in broken English/google translate Japanese. He seemed nice, we were talking about baseball and boxing, so its one of my goals to find that bar again and be able to talk this time. And go to a different city. I road to Osaka for a day, but maybe next time I'll visit Kyoto for a couple of days or something.
