Greetings to you glorious Hungary.

I'll be visiting your proud nation in July and wanted to know what foods and drinks would you recommend I try whilst there. I'll be in your capital city. Also any recommendations for places to visit during the day and places to drink at night? Also is it considered polite or looked on positively if I try to learn and speak a few phrases whilst there?

all our beers suck, our wine is generally good but i don't know what you like so our can't recommend anything. pálinka is our national hard liquor. it's made from lots of different fruits, but as a rule of thumb the less exotic it sounds, the better. plum and apricot are great. makes sure it's around 50% v/v. if they're trying to sell you some 37,5% pansy ass shit you're getting ripped off

Apostolok Étterem. It's a bit touristy and overpriced, but their food is great and most of it is traditional Hungarian dishes. I'd eat a goulash and stuffed cabbage.
On the low end I'd try "főzelék" bars. It's a basic vegetable porridge made from stuff like potatoes, beans or peas. Order some meat as topping and you get a nice well-rounded meal. Another things Huns like when they eat out is butcher's shops.

i don't go clubbing so i can't help you there but if you want a slice of commie era nostalgia, you should visit Mátra Borozó on the Buda side. comfiest pub on Earth. if you want something hungary-specific, order fröccs (wine mixed with soda water) and "zsíros kenyér" (lard on bread)

are you a native Brit? (i'm asking because if you aren't you'd probably be interested in castles and shit but if you are European, you've seen bigger bigger and better preserved ones)

Not a native brit but lived here for years. Looking for a bit of culture in the day but cheap drinks is probably a slightly higher priority knowing my friends. Preferably within the city since we'll only be in the country for 4 nights. Although I'm happy for some out of city attractions because I'll likely visit again before I depart this mortal realm.

get on one of those tourist boats near the foot of Erzsébet bridge. it's not overly exciting but you can get the lay of the land and you can drink while you're on it
look up what ruin pubs are, they're good places for drinking and getting to know with people, and with the amount of Brits you usually find there you'll feel right at home
