Occitania wasn't "culturally oppressed" for centuries. It has always been part of France, and from an intellectual standpoint, contributed to shaping the country the most after the region of Paris. And while the Occitan languages were replaced in the 18th century in an effort to centralize, most Occitan people today don't feel much attachment to these languages and one can assess that centralization was precisely what France needed then because of the German threat.
This is coming from someone who was born in Marseille, so I am technically an Occitan. I do feel sympathy for the Catalan independence movement but it's idiotic to want us to join in. We haven't been the same territory since 987.
