A friend of mine lived there for a year and I have visited Malta for 2 weeks.

We had these in elementary school and so we learned. We also had exams where we had to name all the European mountains, seas and rivers.

I remember those exams because they were so easy because all you had to do was memorize things.

Geography isn't treated with much importance here, it's mostly just treated as an extra class that nobody really likes but has to go through in order to get good predicted grades. Most people here focus on the sciences and maths only. It's easy, you're right, but people forget it just as easily as they learn it.

Can not stress enough the extent of geographic ignorance among Americans. But in their defense, there is no reason for them to know malta or monaco or luxembourg etc. Majority of them can live their entire life not knowing any European countries other than "italy is the one that looks like a boot right?" and it would be of no real consequence. It blows my fucking mind how many people I know that don't even know the location of US states.

Yes that's true, but I'm pretty sure if I pointed to a little island below Italy on the map and asked them "what country is this?" They'd probably tell me it's a part of Italy. The average person is not super intelligent buddy, the average person is not some elite geographer.
