Converted Abraham religion people is often more "extreme" than the one who born with it. Like for example, my mom's acquaintance was converted from christianity to islam, and she wore burqa, something that was uncommon here. I can see that something like this will happen in converted christian or converted mormon.
Also it also depends on which sect she is now, and which sect she is converted to. I once asked my friend about the sect in catholic, and I think some of them are a bit extreme, like you only can eat white food/drink kind of sect.

Election is expensive. In America you have political donors on both side. In Malaysia you have to find the money yourself. That's why you have the 1MDB fiasco and on opposition's side, Penang tunnel project and Khalid Ibrahim's removal from Chief Minister's post. All had to do with saving up enough money for the election.
Previously in Umno, the party itself hold the money but when Umno was deregistered in 1987, Mahathir found himself with no fund because the party's account was frozen. After registering Umno Baru he decided that the party could no longer hold the money so he set up proxies and cronies to hold the money for him. That's why Pak Lah was easily defeated by Mahathir because he directed his proxies to freeze the money from going to Pak Lah.
Najib knew about this so he decided to set up 1MDB to take over and cut new projects from going to Mahathir's cronies. In Mahathir's time, cronies had lots of power and can even influence public policy. Just compare how lrt back then and now were built. Not only cronies got all the projects, but when they went bankrupt, government will bail out them using public funds.
Mahathir is angry that Najib no longer gives projects to his cronies and also because his son Mukhriz lost Umno's election. By hook or by crook Mukhriz must be Prime Minister because if not, when Mahathir dies, his family can kiss billions of dollars in their cronies pocket goodbye.
