Wahhabism appeared much later (18th) than Sunni Islam.
It was met with a lot of opposition but is still alive thanks to the Saud dynasty. It’s an offshot of the Hanbali maddhab of Islam.
They basically want to emulate and follow Islam the way it was followed in its early ages even though it’s vague and adhere to a strictly literal interpretation of the scriptures, including hadith while hadith and Quran are different.
