honestly mixed bag. from what i can tell, it depends on location.
the three major american cultures are the Southern culture, the Middle American culture, and the New England one.
Middle America got hit hardest with the "America has no real culture, we're a melting pot/salad" that says that it's all individual histories with no real ethos.
the South on the other hand is either African-American or American by self-identification.
I grew up in the Upland South with vague understandings of German and Scotch-Irish ancestry, but it is so distant now and the American culture is so strong i just see myself as American in identity.
