I watched Indian Horse in the theatres over the weekend and I havent cried from a movie so much since i watched March of the Penguins. Its about residential schools in Canada, and this one kid who makes it out of there through playing hockey. Its worth a watch for sure.

Residential schools are like the Canadian version of the stolen generation in Aus. Indigenous kids were taken from their parents and communities and placed in these big boarding schools run by the catholic church. They had to forget their language and their traditions. A lot of abuse happened there. Kids were beaten, starved, sexually abused, and never shown any love. The last residential school closed in 1996 and the impact theyve had is still clearly visible today. Super sad desu.

Yeah it was state sponsored. The Canadian government wanted to assimilate the indigenous people into the Euro-Canadian culture and society. Pretty fucked up.

I'm not sure about Canada but I think that the feds would take kids and give them to the Baptist and Methodist congregations here. The schools were really brutal.
