They really thought that they had purchased a piece of national history embodied in stone, and were naive enough to think that mocking laughter from Europe was respect for the wealth that enabled them to buy what their own tradition and culture lacked.

Not the kind of guy I'm talking about. I'm talking about the guy who spends years studying English, read about American history, went through the citizenship tests, and just loves this country. These kinds of people are effectively welcome into American society. It's often not like that in other societies (for example Japan)
