That wasn't true though; the Tet Offensive cost over a million men. It was so expensive that Hanoi avoided direct confrontations on the battlefield thereafter. They were a small country; they didn't have infinite bodies to throw into the field like China did.

South Vietnam was doing well in the early 70s--they had a booming economy and a quite liberal political system. There was also a pretty much free press that actively reported on and debated issues with numerous newspapers. This was in sharp contrast to the grim Stalinism of the North.
