On the morning of December 9, two British soldiers, Privates Church and Andrews, wandered into a valley north of Jerusalem to forage for food. The two Tommies were part of General Edmund Allenby’s Egyptian Expeditionary Force, which had broken through the Turkish defenses in Gaza and encamped three miles from the city of Jerusalem.

As Church and Andrews looked around in search of a farm to buy some eggs, a group of men in civilian clothes and Ottoman uniforms approached them with a white flag. It was the mayor of Jersualem, his chief functionaries, and the city’s most important priests, rabbis, and imams. They had the keys to the city, and they wanted to surrender. In the night, the Turkish army defending the city had slipped away northeast to the river Jordan.

Eight hundred years before English crusaders had halted in almost the exact spot where the two privates took the city’s surrender. Richard the Lionheart and his men, however, had failed to go any further. The two soldiers found two sergeants, who found a general to accept the surrender officially, and Allenby began his preparations to enter the city triumphantly. The great victory would be marked by a humble parade, though. Allenby planned his celebration with history and religion in mind, deciding to enter the city on foot, as the Rashidun Caliph Umar had done when he conquered Jerusalem in 637 AD.
