The latest Monero fork negatively affected privacy. Anybody claiming the forked token would reveal a part of the network, the more people wou'd claim it the better such an attack would work in deanomizing users. Now consider how much Monero exchanges hold, and how much Monero has been passed through their wallets. With this fork, a huge part of the network could be unvield by exchanges claiming balances on the forked side of the coin. At this point I would hold Monero's privacy at a rather questionable point. Something which could not possible happen with ZK-Snarks; this is one huge down side of having ring signatures.

OP is correct the fork is a big privacy concern, if you value your anonymity you shouldn't collect the fork coins.
Haven't heard the exchange angle though, that is concerning too.
