its because spanish allows you to speak to half the world (land wise)
english + spanish, and bam you can converse with everyone in the western hemisphere (except maybe a few monkeys), along with a decent chunk of the eastern hemisphere
spanish is on the decline tho, french speaking african population is going to triple (and then some) by 2050 (if projections are correct)
