Bologna, smallish in Italian scale, comfy center, northern italian lifestyle and especially not too touristy although the city is full of history.

Depends on your lifestyle, if you're a city boy there are several medium-sized cities like Ferrara, Padova, Bergamo, Mantova (hinterland included) that are comfy as fuck despite the population, otherwise there are hundreds of towns that lack nothing essential and compensate by being pretty and immersed in nature.
Bologna is a communist shithole with horrible people and immigrants. Only go there as a tourist for the history and food. No more than three days.

I live in a little town between the centre and south italy on the appenines, it's pretty fucking comfy. The sea is near, the weather never gets too hot, the city is near as is the sea.
