If you have no identity you have to make one yourself, and this is easily taken advantage - i.e. you love gardening, so you become a proud gardener, so you spend your excess capital of gardening equipment, then you make friends with gardeners, then you compete with your gardener friends by buying expensive seeds, shovels, whatever. You can gain more social standing by spending more capital, unlike if you were, say, a proud Mongolian from a small village and your social standing among your group comes from how strong of a person you are and how much work you put into your homeland, something that cannot be easily exploited to make you into a money sieve. Some modern subcultures intentionally try to avoid this fate, like pretty much every anti-art movement in existence, but within a few years they get a defined "aesthetic" and some t-shirt company will make a shirt inspired by it to sell globally. Even the most critical and nihilistic anti-capitalist movements have been turned into a money making making, the whole Che Guevara t-shirt thing is a perfect example of that.

When everyone in your country has no collective identity it results in apathy. Nobody cares about things that are collectively bad as long as you are (individually) fine. Most Americans will violently oppose any additional taxes even if it means the quality of a life as a whole will increase. That is why we will N E V E R have a good healthcare system - when a European is told they will help their countrymen by paying a bit more every year, they agree, because their country is healthier and the children are happier and better educated. But you try to do a reform in America? Everyone gets butthurt - "they're not my kids!" and "it's their own fault for being sick, why should I care?" And it's very easy to exploit and apathetic populace, look how much debt we all get thrown into just to exist.
