Some insight into how this can affect these areas culturally in the us is that most of the german ancestry people were the religious zealot immigrants, thats why those areas tend to be more conservative and religious today

"American" and "British" are the same. almost all "Americans" are English or Scottish/Protestant Irish.
except they weren't. the Germans came to be free and to farm the frontier. the religious zealots were mostly the English that went to New England and expanded westward along the Canadian border. they're now the most liberal white areas today (with the exception of eastern Idaho, Utah etc where they converted to Mormonism)

he liked the people there. he's much more social and open than most Russian people, who are very guarded and closed-off, the opposite of rural white Southerners. warm winters, guns, etc worked as a motorcycle mechanic, which is his dream (doesn't pay nearly as much in Russia, he does IT security)
interestingly the only thing he didn't like was the food. he hates sweet food. it was too much for him. Russian food is more bitter/sour than sweet.
the Dutch, French, and Germans have been in America for just as long. some Nordics, the Swedes iirc, even had a colony in Delaware or somewhere like that.
