Stop funding the railways, they're only shit because they're half nationalised. They know the government will keep paying them so they don't need to increase quality, efficiency or longevity because they're being propped up. Removing all funding would force them to be competitive.

buses in other places are like £2.20 (if not more) (for one journey) and if you miss one you end up waiting for 30 minutes.
rails are sort of a natural monopoly so there isn't as much of an incentive to be efficient on them anyway mate.

I'm not against nationalising them over what we have now. What we have now is the worst of both worlds. No other country has a problem like Britain's with their railways, because half-in half-out is retarded. I just believe private rail would function better given we already have private rail. It's possible a full Aussie/Japanese style revamp of the system would work better but it would take a huge upfront cost to start moving to travel cards outside of London and basically gutting the current businesses.

I use British rail all the time, and beyond your idiotic adhom I can't see any other reason. We're one of he only countries who treats rail this way and we're also the proud owners of the worse, least efficient, slowest and most costly railways I can think of. It's a cataclysm of government intervention and free-market green giving us the absolutely worst aspects of both policies. The money grubbing of the private firms vs the 'just throw money at it' inefficient and stupid policy of nationalised services.

you're going to ride a train to toil regardless of whatever competitive pressure you might think, removing a government subsidy might have. Because at the end of the day, even if there was no government and a there was a bit more rail companies competing, it would be the most collusive market ever, since they would all make a lot more money by just agreeing to maintain localised monopoly than entering price wars.

I'll start by saying there are multiple train services that provide my trips, though they take different routes to the end destination, so for longer trips it isn't such a monopoly at all.
It absolutely isn't a 'natural' monopoly though, there's just no point competing because the government is only funding one service to run so any competition would be absolutely fucked from the start. Withdraw that crutch and suddenly you'd see genuine competition.
