Bulgaria is somewhat irrelevant to my opinion - the fact I'm a citizen of a state that was randomly assembled by eastern South Slavic tribes in late 19th century under the name of a political entity that ceased to exist a millenium ago certainly did help me on my way to enlightenment, but what I said applies to every human on this earth, really. You know deep down that your national identity is fake and your real, non-imagined identity is much more fragile - and much more worthy of preservation. It's just a matter of time and circumstances for it to surface, I've seen the process a million times :3

But see, that's why I talk about political entities specifically - there is no continuity between the three states that historically existed on the Danube under the name of Bulgaria (there was some between the First and Second Empires, but no such relation with the Third Bulgarian state, as the only thing that ensured the continuity of the state in the Middle Ages - the nobility - was obliterated by the Ottoman conquest; smaller feudals survived in general, as they collaborated with the Turks in hope of receiving ништяки from the new overlords, but their kins continued their existence as tax-exempt militarised peasants, not as nobles).

In 18-19th century, when nationalism started to form as an ideology among different peoples in Europe, nobody except monks and other people with access to at least rudimentary historical education knew the word "Bulgaria" at all, so the many Slavophonic "tribes" and zadruga-s (agricultural communes) in the Danube Plains had to be "educated" that that they're now not simply poljanci (field dwellers), gornenci (highlanders), dolnenci (lowlanders) etc., but "Bulgarians", descendants of this and that glorious empire of the past, and they better stand and fight together to form a sovereign nation-state like all the good whipipo do.

This was not an unique situation by any means, this is how modern nation-states in Europe were founded as a rule. It was also a necessary and "progressive" part of the historical process at the time. I'm just pointing out the artifice of that kind of identities.
