I can only explain as a weird memetic happenstance - it started as a paid shill campaign, but somehow mutated into a self-sustaining tribal meme.
That's what link today is. It's a meme that managed to infect a significant portion of Jow Forums posters. They don't own it because they think it makes technical sense, that's only a rationalization of their tribal feelings.
Linkers think of themselves as part of the 'link' tribe; anything else is rationalization. New linkers don't buy it because they read the whitepaper and thought it's a good idea - they buy because they want to become a part of the tribe.

Meme infectivity outside of Jow Forums is abysmal; rather than evangelize, linkers appear mostly content to virtue signal to each other and denigrate 'nolinkers'. This only works on people pathologically afraid of being a part of the outgroup, and as a result most likely to attack non-members to virtue signal their commitment, only making the problem worse. For this reason I don't expect link to be a big success.
Bitcoin maximalists are a bit similar today, but weren't like that in the past - the enemies weren't people without bitcoin, but bankers and bureaucrats, which means everyone outside of these two narrow group was assumed to be a friend. Now the main enemy is 'the altcoiner', especially 'bcasher'.
