why exactly is the name "Sean" being spelled as "Shaun"?
Why exactly is the name "Sean" being spelled as "Shaun"?
Same reason tough and though have no any same sounds - english is chinese tier language where you should learn spelling of each word like hieroglyphs
Rzwhy Sznotcz?
>knight
>night
:^)
>sword
>spelled as "sord"
>import-ant
Sean is the Irish spelling, Shaun is the Bong/Burger spelling.
>Bean is been
>Dean is deen
>Lean is leen
>Jean is jeen
>Mean is meen
>but Sean is Shaun
it's the irish version of john, originally spelt seán. á is pronounced "aw" in irish
English is an inconsistent and idiotic language. I'd not know it if it weren't necessary to function in this country and global economy.
sjan
Seán is the correct spelling, the Gaelicisation of the French name Jean. American and English bastards bastardised it into "Shaun" and "Shawn". Some people think they're correct in saying "Sean", which is at least better than the other two but doesn't have the á
>colonel
>kernel
>lieutenant
>leftnant
Kys rodrigo
i know a guy whose name is spelled "Juan" but is pronounced like "Jean"
>tenant in lieu
>left tenant
one is pseudo-french and the other anglicised pronunciation, but both make at least some sense
I feel like I am too old to begin to not pronounce the W in words like Sword or Write/Wrong.
I learned about silent letters this year, although I was corrected about the silent K (know, knight), and the silent gh, when in high school.
English is shitty at anglicizing foreign words to have a logical spelling.
>create the most bastardized fucked up retarded mutt language on the earth
>force the rest of the world to learn it
based UK
>knight
The k actually was originally vicalised but people didn't want to sound like autists so it was dropped.
>based UK
you mean America
Americans didn't make English they just mutt'ed it even more
>been is ben
>Americans didn't make English they just mutt'ed it even more
So most of our revolutionary population weren't mostly descended from the same stock as the Anglos they fought?
english wouldn't be so widespread if it wasn't for USA
they dominated the world with their movies, music etc. in 20th century
>tfw I "accidently" called somebody called sean "seen" when reading his name off a list
English doesn't follow any rules and is the most successful and brings riches on those who speak it, why is it such a chad language
>tfw friends always called you seen and senis while growing up
>english is chinese tier language where you should learn spelling of each word like hieroglyphs
Blame France and Scandinavians
I don't know a single Shaun but I know 4 Seans.
