After Russia launched Sputnik, Americans became convinced that the reason they were behind Russia in rocket science was that math was taught improperly, so they invented a new type of math cleverly named "new math," which was base 8 and completely insane. For literally 99.9999% of calculations involving only operators you don't need a system, it should take you 2 seconds MAX to do any calculation.
If you have logarithms, equation systems, complex functions, i'll give you 1-2 minutes, still no calculator or ''method'' needed to solve them.
When you start with combinatorics, sure, use some sort of algorithm
