Increased my daily cards from 17 to 33 since I started studying new words with physical flash cards. I spend the same amount of time learning 33 as I did 17 and my next day retention is probably 20-30% higher for those cards than before. I'm paranoid that I'm not actually remembering it this way for some reason but I guess time will tell. I don't see a reason why my retention over the long term would go down but I'm worrying it will.
Can't wait to start reading in a month or two, under the condition that I don't just give up as soon as the going gets tough.

What the study actually demonstrates is that children use effective language learning techniques (by accident) while adults use ineffective ones. Adults who use the same method as children for the same time period can and will attain native-like proficiency. They're just rare because most adults believe languages are learnt by going to class, playing smartphone apps, grammar exercises, etc.
Your new card limit or your review limit? You should not have a review limit. For new cards, you can do more if you want but that will result in more reviews in the future. Lots of beginners do too many new cards and end up overwhelmed by the reviews later.

Being split between /jp/ and Jow Forums, Jow Forums being a relatively faster board are reasons. 日本語スレッド has a different purpose, so I don't think it is the reason why threads die.

so apparently both advanced I and advanced ii courses in uni have no textbooks. it's based around newspapers, magazine articles, tv news, composition, etc.
is this typical of advanced courses?
It's not possible to become advanced in a language through textbooks, so how it should be is that you would be skeptical if they DID have a textbook.
It's like how "English" courses work in universities of countries where a.) it is the native language and b.) where English is an official language/prominent secondary language
You never learn grammar or anything of that kind there because it is assumed you learned it in your primary education.
If there is a textbook for English, that usually tackles academic writing and how to properly cite sources using an academic citation system.

Only you can define how useful a language is. If you find what the Germans, Russians and Japanese spew out interesting but language barriers prevent you from further accessing more of them, that will determine what language will be more "useful" to learn.
As for "entertainment" value, learning a language will definitely be a chore at some point, no matter what it is. The joy comes in reading native materials that you actually like.

Well, I think I would find norwegian and german to be very useful when it comes to information.
But I'm interested in japanese, although I must say I don't think I've found many things I would consider to be essential in it as I have with others, for example chinese and the ones mentioned before.
Japanese is more useful than most languages imo, because they have a shitton of media to consume
otherwise it's just a ridiculously hard language to learn, which on its own is also a bit of a reason for me, but probably not enough to keep going

Did I just burn out or something? What do you do when you (temporarily) lose motivation at one part of learning the language?
In my experience, the best thing to do is to stop doing new cards when you notice your motivation dwindling. I've burned out twice in the past where I stopped doing Anki for months, and coming back from that isn't fun. The third time I noticed I was burning out, I stopped new cards and managed to not drop Anki thanks to how much easier gets when you only need to worry about reviews. The fourth time I got sick of it and dropped Anki altogether, but that's another story.
I do it in the morning every day in the same way I brush my teeth and shower. It doesn't matter whether I'm motivated. Skipping is just not an option. Regiment the time (morning is best) and allow yourself no flexibility. If you miss a day, commit seppuku and promise to do better in the next life.
That might be it, I stopped doing it in the morning because of change in work-life schedule. It's much harder to do things once I come back home being worn out from work.
Thanks. I think I'll give it another week or so then - if I still can't get motivated I'll stop doing new words for the rest of the month. Maybe focus on reading instead.

How do I revive my enthusiasm in the "learn kanji" stage?
I'm a beginner too but since your question relates to the general concept of "motivation" I'll chime in. Enthusiasm isn't enough generally to maintain the interest and work level required to pursue anything that's difficult and takes a long time.
You need a concrete purpose for what you are doing as well as discipline. Motivation and enthusiasm fade away, purpose and discipline don't. Not as easily at least. So to answer your question, remember why you wanted to learn in the first place and have the discipline to follow through on it.
Also, I can't speak to this in regards to Japanese due to being in the early stages, but other things I've pursued in the past become much more manageable once you break through the very early novice stage and can feel that you are making tangible progress.

Yup. Worst part of learning Japanese is the beginning when you can't use it for anything and don't understand how anything works. Once you're good enough to enjoy reading it gets better (but you still need a lot of discipline).
