it's more a cultural divide of rural vs. urban than anything else, and more southerners tend to be rural and out in the middle of nowhere, whereas the northeast is essentially cram packed in most places into cities
in terms of ideals, there's certainly still much more religious influence in the south and most of southern society is deeply christian

it depends on what you want from where you're living, north carolina and virginia are probably the most developed southern states, arkansas has the best outdoors, tennessee has the best music, mississippi and alabama are 80% podunk but the cost of living is cheap, georgia has a lot of developed areas as well and has a lot of money flowing into it

yeah, there's a huge number of people who live out in the woods/mountains/country who tend to be fairly self sufficient, lots of rednecks and farmers and the like
cost of living is cheap in most places, with work it really depends on what you do, there's a lot of demand for certain specialized professions in some of the nice parts of the state but the rest of the industries tend to be locally owned
land is reasonably cheap, and gun laws are fairly lax, also like half of our counties don't sell alcohol, and in the rest of the state you can't buy it on sundays

the west coast is young and their culture is basically connected to the rise of hollywood, so not only has it not been around long enough to develop it's own character but it has a bloodsucking mass-consumerism leech attached to it which to be perfectly honest has left a great mass of people as shallow as the movies they gluttonize
the midwest is very down to earth and you find a lot proper agrarian american character, but as with the west coast they've not had the time to develop their culture into something with roots yet, i couldn't name a song from the midwest or a notable dish
and throughout it all the south clings to it's past stubbornly and spitefully
