Late Proto-Indo-European. People begun to use a suffix for collective nouns that, over time, got assigned to women and feminine stuff too.

The one I used there is the traditional for the Germanic languages. In Romance it would be reversed (the Sun is a he, the Moon is a she). It probably has mythological backgrounds.
