Is Scots a language or a dialect of English?

Scots branched off from what is Middle English/Northumbrian. I would say that it is a distinct dialect of English that is more closely related to its roots than Modern British English is.

Shut down a lot of industries like ship building in Scotland and Northern England as it was becoming too expensive and the U.K. was turning into a mainly service-based economy. It was becoming more beneficial for countries like yours to build ships than ours.
