politics is 90% perception, not policy per se. macron is a handsome man in his prime who at least seems like a strong confident leader who knows what he's doing. compare him to the other people considered to be "leading" the EU. weedy insidious figures like tusk, juncker and schulz. merkel, who despite being a strong leader has a bad public perception in britain due to her actions during the refugee crisis and the fact that she was at the helm during greece's crisis for which germany got alot of flack.

added to that, i don't think british people would have ever accepted a union in which germany is the de facto figurehead, british people are too distrusting of germans for that, whereas our relationship with france is much warmer and our rivalry is tongue-in-cheek. and whether he's succeeding right now or not, macron has increased france's international perception dramatically, especially since he's following >hollande and he beat ebul nazi le pen to get there.
