And this was 5 years ago too. It's only worse now, but there's a lot of factors being left out of this. Did he come from a rich/poor family? Did he have student debt? How long had he been looking for work? I had an Accounting and Finance degree but there were no fucking jobs either. So I decided to teach myself coding and I got a really good coding job without a CS degree just because I knew somebody. It's all about networking now.

Then taught myself to code and spend all of my savings on a coding academy. But I only got what I have now because of my connection. Would've been totally fucked otherwise.

What sort of resources did you use to self learn? I'm interested in learning how to code but I don't really know where to start. Any good books to recommend?

I went online and looked at what skills people hiring in the tech field wanted the most. Things like Java, Angular JS, Python, C#, C++ etc and bought a big stack of books. Just months of sitting down studying and practicing. But a coding academy helps too because really good ones simulate what it's like to be in an actual workplace, work in teams, and to be on the spot.

I got A*A*A* on my alevels and a first in Physics BA from an top 5 uni in Britain.
