In a horrific systematic mass murder that began years ago today, the Iraqi army and various local tribes killed over 3,000 Assyrians in villages across the Iraqi countryside near Syria and Turkey. The worst of the killing occurred at the town of Simele, where most of the scattered Assyrian communities had gathered for government protection after widespread Iraqi looting of their villages.
The Simele massacre sparked the creation of the concept of ‘genocide’. Here is a photo of a group of Iraqi Assyrians, taken just one year prior to the genocide.
