You can kill it by snapping its neck, granted you don't let it peck or claw your eyes out. There was a news story about some 10yo boy who did this to a metso that tried to take over their yard.
They subsist extensively on pine needles, so the meat is rather strong tasting.

All bird species are edible although some (mostly carnivores and scavengers) don't taste very good.
