Lads, be very fucking careful if you haven't installed the latest Windows update yet. Despite my ordeal yesterday, I accidentally ran the update on my main PC this evening (I was installing a program and had to restart). It has shut down/blue screened 3 times since then.

No, sorry, bad use of the term "bluescreen". When Windows 10 randomly restarts your PC to try and "fix" a "problem", it displays a blue screen with some relevant information on it. It's not a traditional blue screen.

Actually yes. Booted it up before I left for work this morning just to test it and I managed to reach the desktop. All my files are there, but it's slow as shit and keeps freezing.

Wine is pretty good for a decent number of things.
I setup VFIO there last week, which was a pain in the arse and I wouldn't recommend it for beginners, but basically I run Linux and and have a Windows VM run side-by-side but pass-through my GPU directly to Windows so there is no performance hit. Have a few issues still to work out though.

You need to go into the task scheduler and look at the WindowsUpdate and UpdateOrchestrator folders and disable the various nefarious tasks set up to look for updates on triggers. It's a bit of a game of whack-a-mole for a while to make sure you've got everything.

A windows VM, and I'd set it up like you said with the gpu passthrough; but I'm very inexperienced with Linux (just done a few things for college like learning the command prompt and briefly playing around with redhat and suse).

Nope, Ubuntu installer does it for you. Just go into "Disk Management" in Windows and shrink your current disk so there is some free space to install Ubuntu.
Then download Ubuntu, stick it on a USB, reboot and boot from the USB and follow the instructions on screen.
After install is finished, every time you reboot you will be presented with the option to boot into either Windows or Linux (Ubuntu).
Probably takes like thirty minutes in total and most of that is just waiting for the download to finish, the ISO to burn to your USB and waiting for the installer to copy over the files.

Probably to a degree, but setting Ubuntu up should be really straightforward. Every other flavour of Linux is much harder to install but Ubuntu make it really easy to switch from Windows.

Certainly worth a try desu, but it took me a good number of days and I've used Linux for a few years.
In the end it was only two or three small things, like a line in some config file that hat to be changed, but it took ages to figure it out.

It's actually sort of amusing how wildly different updates are in Windows and Linux.
I sort of jumped ship around the time Windows 10 was coming out so I don't have a lot of these bad experiences with updates people have had.

I think so. I have vague memories of it, if it was on Club Disney on The Den then yes I must have.
