For example, I know that in terms of the continuation of the human race it is not necessary for me to have children, enough other people around the world will, and everything will keep on keeping on.
Other animals cannot possess that understanding. The biological imperative exists because they act and live on instinct. We don't anymore.
We are able to look at survival as something on a purely personal level (eat drink sleep etc), while removing those "instincts" that are typically linked to tribal/group survival.
