Does Spanish contain no short vowel sounds?

The thing that kept confusing me for a long time is shit like "lives", "he lives" and "our lives" are written exactly the same but pronounced completely differently.
So for a long time I wrote the plural of life as "lifes" instead because that would actually kind of make sense given how it is pronounced

spain has 5 vowel sounds
a - e - i - o - u
they are always consistently pronounced the same way, except in gue - gui - que - qui (here the U is skipped, except if it has ü like pingüino)
