This. I first understood the power of China during 2008 (was my 2nd year of uni), the recession didn't touch them. They still posted positive GDP results, and most of the foreign students I knew were not affected, while the people at home were getting wiped out left and right. China is the only country in the world as of this moment that seems farther than the next election. They look at things decades away. They are also a lot freer than US and Western/Eastern Europe in some respects - e.g. no regulation preventing biomedical research. China was weak for the past hundred years, but for the next hundred it will be a very different story, they will reclaim top spot.

It's not quite controlled demolition. Western economies are based on consumption, which requires at a minimum a stable population to keep consuming and pay for the next round of gibs. Populations have been declining in Western countries. No one wants to be left bagholding when the consumer economy becomes impossible, so they keep pumping the economy with immigrant consumers and pumping real estate prices instead to keep the whole thing going, because it would be untenable to cut spending on Boomers, which will just make the collapse worse.
