I'm not him. Why would I strive to make the accent sound native? In countries where English medium education exists, a local form of English develops among school children receiving English schooling. Same with Singapore and many African countries. That is the English I have grown up speaking. I think in English, and it is practically my first language because my mother tongue is not spoken where I live. I speak to my brother and sister only in English. So this is *my* native English. The word structure while speaking is also somewhat different and there are many differences here and there in terms of pronunciation. I've never seen anyone who speaks in a foreign accent. It would be extremely pretentious.

It is a common phenomenon among white collar class children in Bangalore. Within school premises, we would generally always communicate in English. I am not "learning" English as a second language. It *is* my language. You see? And I speak it in the way it is spoken within the English medium school subculture. The reason I don't speak to my siblings in our mother tongue (Bengali) is because it is not the local language of Bangalore (Kannada). We are migrants from West Bengal. As a result we never learned how to read Bengali properly as it is not taught in school, so we cannot convey complex ideas in Bengali. So the only language that could take its place was English, the language used in our school textbooks.

Let me give you a quick lesson about India. We have almost 30 states, which were 20 something Kingdoms before the brits invaded. After Independence, we had this dude who approached the remenants of these kingdoms and pitched that everyone of these should join a Union of states, called India.
So modern India has like 30 something states, almost each with their own language (+ dialects, emphasis on 20+ languages) and laws. So, that guy's from the state of Bengal (lang: Bengali), he moved to the state of Karnataka where the native language is Kannada, so he can't really talk in his native language.
The only language that's spoken across all states is English, and it's the defacto business language of India.

Considering that stuff like Telegu and Tamil aren't even in the Indo-European family, probably. Also, there are no schools for them I reckon. But Bengali is Indo-European and very similar to Hindi so they should have learned it.

In every state, government sector education is provided in the state language. Secondary and tertiary education is always only in English. Wealthier parents send their children to English medium schools from the 1st grade. Hindi is not imposed mandatorily upon any non-Hindi state. Every state uses its own state language and English for all administrative purposes. So technically English is the only common language of India, but because of poor educational facilities, only 11 percent of the country speaks English. Hindi is taught as a language subject in most private schools. So in Bangalore, the three languages I was taught in school in order of importance were English, Kannada and Hindi.

Hindi isn't spoken in Bengal and North East either, so I think it's unfair that we expect people of like 15~ states to learn it. The issue with Indian languages is that they're written in different scripts too. The vocabulary might be slightly similar but it's like learning Russian for a native english speaker.
(I'm not a salty Dravidian btw, I'm from Delhi and my native language is Hindi).
English education should be improved tho, we're not counted as native english speakers although we do our entire schooling and college education in English, and yet we got appu accent and poor vocab and grammar.

Ehmm, I picked up the accent that I have by playing with europooans. Mostly brits, germans, swedes and finns so it's all over the place. I don't speak in a fake americano like ShahrukhKhan did on his TED talk (not his show). And that's consistent, doesn't matter if I'm playing and on discord, or with my uni buds, or during the job interviews I gave or whatever. If I speak in English, then I talk like that. The only exception was when I used to play with Russians, then I talk like them but I started learning Russian a few months ago and I don't speak english with them at all.
