Simple answer is that they are too large.
There are more complicated answers to this question however. American car companies had failed to establish a foothold in Japan during the interwar and postwar years, in part due to protectionist policies, but also due to strong dollar/weak yen making American exports to Japan more expensive than the other way around. American cars are marketed towards the American market in more ways than one: until recently, most cars did not take advantage of a turbocharger to provide higher power output (because of cheap, low-octane gas) and internal volume tends to be rather large, if not excessive, in comparison to most foreign makes. It also does not help that around the 1970's to 1980's, American cars acquired a lousy reputation for reliability and build quality. All of these factors shrunk their share of the passenger car market to such an extent that the only way out was to focus on areas that were not dominated by foreign manufacturers, namely SUVs and heavy duty pick-up trucks.

American cars seems to me at least, are built for long highways and open roads. Whereas japan is a rock in the sea and every road has to be carved into the rock.
One would compare japanese efficiency, humility and cleanliness to american shart, greed, indecency and ignorance connecting it to their cars, but their cars are legendary and it is unfair to make such connections.
