I usually say that I am European to people from other continents. Majority of people there actually have very poor to childlike knowledge of Geography (in specially Americans). They simply are too ignorant for a more detailed input.

You know we call them Asian because when we assume their country of origin they get fucking offended right? When you are abroad and have to deal with non-Europeans while you're not in the mood to explain from what tiny country you are, you can just say you're European and get it over with.

I work in the tourist industry and i felt bad at first about saying "Holland" instead of "the netherlands", but i realised even people from Brabant or Limburg say they're going back to "Holland" as if i was too much of a brainlet to know the name of their country.

I usually identify as french. But in a complete different country, with many cultural differences, I tend to say "in Europe, we do things like that". I just don't think we're that different, at least in western europe.

The only real regionalism is with the difference between Limburg and the Friesland, the more extreme north and south parts of the country, but especially Limburg.

The problem is that Germany has been ruled by Prussia while German language decided to standardize hoch-Deutsch.
