It has been previously suggested by another user that mainnet HAD to be ready by Sept but didn't clarify why.
The Payment Services Directive (PSD2) launches in Sept 2018 and it has been suggested here, based on piecing together several pretty convincing chunks of info found, that Link is involved in that. It could be coincidence.

It is my contacts understanding that this will be the case but September-October will be the trial period for PSD2 leading to full release in November.
